ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Julia Asselin

Traveling to the Fiji Islands is an experience I will never forget. It left a huge impact on my life. I was so impressed with the beautiful land, the wonderful people and their uncomplicated way of life.

The poem in my work explains my feelings and changes that occurred in me as a result of my travel. The making of a masi, a painted barkcloth with distinct patterns, inspired the design encircled by my poem in Impressions. Items depicted in the border of my work are things that impress me and are of great importance. The music, the oceanic view, meeting new people, stargazing, the scenery, sketching, and attending a Fijian Mass were awesome experiences and made me feel at home. My border designs were kept uncomplicated and remind me of my unhurried, calm and simpler life while in Fiji. Some of my border designs repeated with the same design but in different colors stating we are all different yet the same. I am thankful to have the opportunity to travel to Fiji, to see and to be a part of another culture. The memories will be with me forever.
