ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Jessica Martin

I chose to use the same medium as in the first self-portrait to relay that my self-image did not change completely but it expanded. I began to see all of the other elements in my life that made me who I am. My posture is slightly altered jus like my life after having gone to Fiji. I can still stand by having to have balance in my life to do the things I want and need to do.

Only now I have a better understanding on how those vary things are even possible for me. Learning and experiencing the Fijian culture helped to put it into perspective. I also added an object in this piece that wasnÕt in the first. The object is the Fiji moon. ItÕs different from ours, or at least it looks that way. I wanted to bring something back with me, in a sense, and this is the way I chose to do.

(I would like to dedicate this artwork in memory of Alex White.)
