Women slam exclusion from govt

THE Fiji Women's Crisis Centre is outraged at the exclusion of
women from the Interim Government which was appointed by the
military yesterday.

Centre coordinator Shamima Ali said the omission of women from
the interim administration was a `slap in the face' particularly after
women have played a crucial role in the peace-building process of the
nation.

"Women have contributed a lot to the development of Fiji and the last
parliament had eight elected female members, who had the mandate of
the people," Ms Ali said.

"The military has totally ignored women in the line up as well as in
the issues on the agenda for the interim administration outlined by
Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama."

Ms Ali said despite outlining the importance of having women in the
administration, the military has ignored the reasons.

"The centre and other groups have written to the military, stressing the
need for the appointed government to have the capacity and
commitment in ensuring that steps are taken to gain the ground that
was lost in the area of women's empowerment and human rights."

Ms Ali said they hoped that women will not be ignored.

"We only hope that people on the interim administration will consult
women in the community and will not ignore their achievements in the
field of women and human rights."

Meanwhile, former education minister in the Chaudhry-led
government, Pratap Chand said the People's Coalition will make a
comprehensive comment today.
