Naitasiri landowners have taken over the Monasavu hydro dam. This
was confirmed by Kasa Saubulinayau, General manager, Generation,
of the Fiji Electricity Authority.
The landowners have closed the main gate that supplies water to the
turbines at the Wailoa power station.
Saubulinayau said water supply to the turbines would be affected,
resulting in further power blackouts.
Most parts of Viti Levu, including the capital Suva, has been without
electricity since early afternoon. The FEA earlier said that the blackout
was caused by a faulty line. However, the company today received a
threat regarding its power station at Kinoya
Army spokesman Filipo Tarakinikini says there may be a rationing of
electricity.
He said the Naitasiri landowners meeting at a school near the army
headquarters has nothing to do with the blackout.
In the past few years landowners have been asking for up to
$40million compensation for use of their land.
