Thursday, July 06, 2000 - 6.00 pm

Naitasiri chief Ratu Inoke Takivaikata is currently meeting army
officials at Queen Elizabeth barracks in Nabua.

This afternoon about 500 people from Laqere and Kalabo gathered
near the military headquarters.

They group had earlier gathered at the Laqere bridge.

After initially returning to their village, the people decided that they'll
go ahead and present their petition to army commander and Head of
State Frank Bainimarama, who has asked his aides to receive the
petition.

It's understood that the villagers want a peaceful end to the hostage
crisis.

The military headquarters is situated on land belonging to the Kalabo
people and it's not known if they are seeking compensation for this in
the petition as well.

The outcome of their talks is still not known
