Australian citizens should consider deferring all travel to Fiji until further
notice. Australians currently in Suva
are strongly advised to leave Fiji or temporarily relocate elsewhere in Fiji.
There remains a strong possibility of lawlessness throughout Suva, and there
also remains the possibility of
further civil disturbances affecting travellers. On 4 July an interim civilian
Government was established and
interim Government Ministers sworn in. The Commander of the Republic of Fiji
Military Forces will remain in
joint executive control with the newly appointed cabinet. He has indicated that
the Fiji Military Forces would
work jointly with the interim Government to stabilise the political situation
and restore law and order. Soldiers
have been deployed around the parliamentary complex in Suva and gunfire was
exchanged on 4 July. We
continue to advise Australians strongly to stay well clear of the complex.
The Fiji Military authorities have lifted the Fiji-wide curfew and retained
a curfew for parts of the Central
Division of Fiji only. Areas under curfew include Suva, Lami and Nausori. Curfew
hours are from 2000 hours
until 0500 hours.
Australians currently in Fiji should maintain a very high level of personal
security awareness and monitor
developments that might affect their safety. They should stay well clear of
demonstrations and large public
gatherings.
While international flights to and from Australia continue to operate, some
flights are being cancelled due to
falling passenger numbers. Trade Union bans have now been suspended. Travellers
wishing to depart Fiji
are advised to book early and confirm reservation details with their airline.
International flights to and from
Nausori (Suva) continue to be diverted to Nadi or suspended. Domestic flights
are operating as normal.
Australian citizens are strongly advised to register with the Australian High
Commission in Suva. For an
update on the security situation, or to register, Australians may contact the
Australian High Commission, 37
Princes Road, Tamavua - telephone (679) 382211 or via e-mail at address: leba.kini@dfat.gov.au
