The Fiji Electricity Authority is now distributing a limited power supply to
residential and commercial customers on Viti Levu until the Monasavu
Hydro dam shutdown is resolved.
The Authority will announce a schedule of shutdowns allocating two hour blocks
of electricity to specified residential and commercial areas
throughout the island during daylight hours. Excluded from the schedule is Tailevu,
Navua, Deuba, Rakiraki and Tavua that have their own power
supply.
FEA Chief Executive, Nizam-ud Dean says the Authority would concentrate its
electricity supply to residential customers during the night. In
addition the FEA would be working closely with the commercial sector to minimise
the shut down time caused to the industry.
Dean says they have drawn up contingency plans should this crisis continue.
All of Viti Levu's electricity is being provided by diesel generators,
with the shutdown of the hydroelectric scheme at Monasavu.
