Roadblocks up again
Sunday, July 09, 2000

Roadblocks at Nabukavesi in Namosi and Wailekutu in Lami are up
again.

Long queues or vehicles are lined up at both roadblocks, with the
drivers hoping that they will be given a chance to pass through.

The roadblock at Nabukavesi was re-erected at 7am today.

The Wailekutu roadblock has been in place since yesterday.

It is partially removed from time to time to allow some vehicles to
pass.

Meanwhile, police have warned motorists not to pass through
Korovou town in Tailevu.

The town, including the police station, was taken over by villagers
from Tailevu north in support of coup leader George Speight, who
comes from the same area.

Since yesterday, the villagers have stolen 12 private cars and four
police vehicles.

Chief wants new govt
Sunday, July 09, 2000

The son of Cakaudrove chief Ratu Tevita Vakalalabure says his
people want a government which secures Fiji for the Fijians.

Ratu Tevita Vakalalabure jnr, who earlier today took over the
Savusavu Police Station, says they want a "government we can
identify with and which can entrench Fijian grievances as rights".

Vakalalabure told Radio Fiji they had no confidence in the military
appointed government of Laisenia Qarase. He said they were also
concerned that in maintaining law and order, the army had shot
Fijians.

"We want a government that is deaf to everybody but Fijian
aspirations," he said. "We want a government that is blind to the
world at large and puts in place Fijian rights."

"We are armed only with our hearts," he said.

He said they would stay put at the station until a new government
sat and addressed these issues.

Wounded rebel dies in hospital
Sunday, July 09, 2000

ONE of the civilians shot outside parliament died last night at the
Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.

A hospital official confirmed that 14-year-old [note from mjf - later reports listed him as 24 and a member of the counter revolutionary warfare unit] Kolinio Tabua, of Namara, Tailevu passed away at about 9.30pm.
He said Mr Tabua's condition had deteriorated rapidly earlier in the evening.

"His condition fell to the worst and doctors attended to him."

However, the hospital official did not give further details, but said
Mr Tabua was the most seriously hurt in the shootout with military
personnel outside the parliamentary complex last Tuesday.

Mr Tabua was one of five supporters of George Speight who were
injured in the stand-off. Relatives said last night Mr Tabua failed to
recover from injuries sustained to his bladder.

The relatives donated blood to help him on Thursday.

A relative said Mr Tabua's grief-stricken father accepted that his ion
had died "for the cause.

"He was satisfied with the fact that his son had given his life for
something he believed in," the relative said.

"People choose to die differently, Mr Tabua chose this way."

Relatives have begun funeral arrangements for the teenager.

Meanwhile, reports from CWM Hospital reveal that another of the
injured has been transferred to the recovery ward.

"He has been taken out of the Intensive Care Unit," the hospital official said.
