Police stations under threat
Monday, July 10, 2000 - 12:15 pm

The police headquarters at the Sukuna House in mi-town Suva
is under threat, with the building being evacuated now.

The Central Police Station has also locked its dual entrances and
several police officers are on guard at the fence.

And the police station at Samabula, outside Suva, has received a
threat that it will be taken over by landowning members 'shortly'.

The 12 police officers at the station are preparing themselves
following the telephoned threat from people claiming to be
landowners from Tamavua. They have requested the military for
backup.

Police stations at Savusavu, Korovou and Seaqaqa have been
taken over by militant landowners and coup leader George
Speight supporters in the past few days.

not yet known. The media has been banned from the meeting.

A spokesman for the villagers says coup leader George
Speight's deputy Ratu Timoci Silatolu is expected to attend the
meeting shortly. Suvavou villagers in Lami are the traditional
owners of much of the land in Suva city.

They have had disputes with the government, claiming to be
shortchanged in the land rentals.
