Telecom facilities in Labasa were under siege with rebels taking
over the buildings and holding hostages.
A radio report said that a senior Telecom engineer was taken away
by the rebels to the Sukanaivalu Barracks which is presently under
the command of rebels.
The engineer is believed to have ordered the severing of links
between the army compound and rebels takeover posts in
Savusavu and Seaqaqa.
A conflicting report said that three rebels had only come to inspect
the installations and had left shortly after.
Meanwhile, about 30 Telecom workers in Suva staged a sit-down
on their carpark asking for the removal of Pratap Singh, the
general manager Network Engineering.
The striking workers are accusing Singh of being a racist.
Chief Executive Officer of Telecom, Winston Thompson is to
meet with the striking workers soon.
