Roadblock problems for fans
Wednesday, July 12, 2000

THE Fiji Rugby Football Union and spectators travelling from
Suva for today's Presidential XV's match against Italy at Lawaqa
Park in Nadroga, are still unsure as to whether they will be
allowed through the road blocks at Wailekutu outside Lami.

FRFU Chief Executive Bob Challenor expressed total
exasperation when asked as to whether the union has made
arrangements with the landowners to allow vehicles to move
freely today.

"I just don't know what's happening, we'll just let it pass,"
Challenor said in between the lines as he rushed about doing last
minute preparation for today and Saturday's game in Lautoka. In
an attempt to find out whether the road will be open today or as
to who was giving orders for the closure of the road, all Post
Sports got were conflicting statements from both landowners
and those in parliament.

While landowners said they were acting on orders given from
parliament, those in parliament said otherwise. "We listen to
those in parliament if they say to open the road tomorrow(today)
and allow people to move about freely or because of the game
we will open it," landowner and spokesperson for Yavusa
Navakavu Mosese Vesikara said yesterday.

"But if they tell us to close it, never mind the games we will
close it, we just listen to them." But rebel spokesman Timoci
Silatolu said, " It's entirely up to those doing the road block if
they feel like opening the road-block it's their decision we are
not giving them orders." At the moment spectators and of course
FRFU are crossing their fingers that the road will be open
today.

Those travelling to the games from Suva are also advised to arrange curfew passes just in case they are late
in returning. Vesikara said road-blocks will continue until the Great Council of Chiefs meeting tomorrow
which means things could return to normal on Saturday regarding Fiji's one-off test against Italy in
Lautoka.
