FIJIAN members of the People's Coalition Government want the
1997 constitution reinstated.
This was the resolution they arrived at in their meeting yesterday.
Spokesman and deposed Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Tupeni Baba
said the next move after the reinstating of the constitution was the
formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU).
According to him this is the only legal way of forming a government
since the constitution has provisions for a GNU.
The GNU will also include Indo-Fijians said Dr Baba. Mr Baba said
Fijian members of the coalition were doing this solely for the sake of
the country.
"We were illegally taken over and no country in the world will ever
support such an action," Dr Baba said.
Dr Baba said Fiji should be aware of the repercussions from foreign
countries if the 1997 constitution was not reinstated.
Yesterday the Fijian members claimed that the Army had no power to
abrogate the constitution.
After their meeting, members visited former President Ratu Sir
Kamisese Mara and President Ratu Josefa Iloilo to present them with
their resolution.
He said that Fijians had the majority in parliament with 24 in the
coalition and 10 in the Soqosoqo ni Vakavulewa ni Taukei party.
One of the main reasons given by George Speight for the May 19 takeover was
the desire to see the constitution
thrown out.
