Coup leader, George Speight, two of his supporters and one armed body guard
were detained by police last night (9.45pm Fiji Time) because of arms allegedly
found on
them. Its believed that they are now being held at the Nabua police station.
Military spokesperson, Lt Colonel Filipo Tarakinikini also revealed threats
were made against the life of Interim President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo and this
is one of the reasons the
three were taken in for questioning. Lt Colonel Tarakinikini points out thats
its unacceptable and illegal for Speight and his supporters to be walking around
armed.
He said immunity that was to be granted to Speight and his supporters is now
in doubt. Lt Colonel Tarakinikini says this is because most of the arms held
by the hostage takers
since May 19th have not been returned to Queen Elizabeth Barracks Armoury.
