THE Lagoon Resort in Deuba has offered its premises as an alternative site
for a new parliament.
There have been numerous calls from various sections of the community for a
new parliamentary complex following the occupation and trashing of the one at
Veiuto by George Speight's supporters.
Lagoon resort spokesman, Jim Sherlock yesterday said he had just the solution
to solve the problem and put the memories of anarchy behind us.
Mr Sherlock said the resort had, up till mid May, been a thriving tourist resort
which hosted dignitaries and tourists from all over the world.
"Today it is totally empty with no forward bookings for the next three
months, thanks to our close proximity to Suva," Mr Sherlock said.
However the government now has the perfect location to place its seat of government
out here at the resort in Pacific Harbour he said.
He said the resort offers:
The current owner will be happy to enter into a monthly leasing arrangement
or even sell the place to government.
Mr Sherlock said all these benefits together with the fact that it is ready
should make it a very attractive site to government.
He said the current administration should quickly establish a government that
will get our rugby Sevens players back into the IRB's sevens circuit.
Secretary to parliament Mary Chapman said the decision to have a new parliament
will have to be made by the government.
She said a lot of money will be spent if the one at Veiuto is to be used again.
