Speight meets army at their HQ (7 pm)

As George Speight continues to negotiate with the military at their their Queen Elizabeth Barracks headquarters in Nabua, there has been a minor incident of trespassing at the USP compound.

Raiwaqa police say four people were seen. However only one person was caught and taken in for questioning.

Meanwhile outside Veiuto , police have started placing shipping containers across Ratu Sukuna road to stop Speight supporters from swarming down from the Parliamentary complex. This follows an incident today where six men allegedly bashed up two police officers. This afternoon another group of supporters ventured to the Nasese shops and were stopped by police. A fight
allegedly broke out resulting the arrest of four.

At this time we cannot establish whether the same measures are taken at other entries and exists to Veiuto.

Meanwhile the Judiciary has revealed that Speight's court case which was expected to heard on the Tuesday after the coup, will still go ahead after the crisis.

According to DPO Merewaleasi Verebalavu , as far as the Prosecutions' office is concerned Speight is expected to appear in court. Around the country , it was business as usual.

In Rakiraki , 12 men were sentenced to 2 years each and 6 were are out on bail for robbery with violence.

The men were arrested during the height of the coup and looting that took place in Rakiraki. Its understood they were involved in the razing of shop.

 

Four Speight supporters assaulted and arrested (3 pm)

Four men believed to from the Parliamentary complex were arrested half an hour ago. Two others managed to escape. Our reporters at the scene said the six came down to buy bread from a shop at Nasese and got into a fight with police constables and the military manning the Nasese check points.

 

Fiji still gets chance at Olympic torch relay (1:25 pm)

With the cancellation by Sydney Olypmic Organising Committee of the torch relay in Fiji, the Cook Islands Sports and Olympic Association has invited FASANOC to join them in their Torch Relay which begins today.

FASANOC President Dr Robin Mitchell says former Olympian Miriama Tuisorisori Chambault will represent Fiji. She flew to the Cooks late yesterday afternoon. Tuisorisori-Chambault was the first Fiji female athlete, flag bearer and captain to an Olympic Games in 1976 in Montreal. She represented Fiji in athletics.

 

Police officer assaulted (1:10 pm)

A police officer was assaulted today. Police public relations officer, Inspector Sera Bernard confirmed this. She says he was hit over the head by a chair but would not elaborate on location and motive.

Meanwhile at around half past twelve, there was a raid at Toorak's Amy apartments. Our reporters at the scene say ten girls who reside there were taken in for questioning at the Central Police Station. We also understand that the owner of the apartments filed a complaint with police saying his room was broken into. Police at the scene say they found stolen items from the looting on Friday May 19th. However Inspector Bernard has refused to comment on the matter.

 

Two stolen vehicles returned (1:05 pm)

Two of the nine cars stolen yesterday were returned to their owners today. One vehicle belonged to a journalist from ABC.

However the head of security there, only known to us as Ligairi says the remaining vehicles will be given back to the owners after they have completed their security check.
