Fiji's gross domestic product could slump to a negative 8.7 per cent this
year following the George Speight kidnapping - and the country's poor,
especially unskilled workers in the construction, tourism and retail
industries, will suffer the most from economic collapse.
These are among the conclusions of economic modellers in Canberra
who have got to work on the impact of the latest crisis, in part through
assessing the results of the coups in 1987.
