TAIPEI, Taiwan (June 9, 2000 Radio Australia)---The Taiwan government
has
announced that it has ordered three warships to pick up Taiwan nationals and
other ethnic Chinese from Fiji.
The Foreign Ministry in Taipei reported that three frigates are in the area
as part of a goodwill voyage to the Pacific Islands region.
It noted that there are some 800 ethnic Chinese in Fiji. Among them, about
50 hold Taiwan passports, while the remainder hold Chinese or other
countries' documents.
Note from MJF: This report does not appear to be referring to the Fiji citizens
who are of Chinese ethnic origin who number far more than 800.
