Public support for the military operations has been tremendous with individuals
and groups of residents visiting checkpoints with food, refreshments and other
little comforts.
One Delainavesi group had even applied for a curfew pass to allow them to
distribute hot drinks and snacks to checkpoint personnel at night.
Raw food is brought back to the barracks to be prepared and eaten before the
soldiers go out on checkpoint and patrol duties.
A group of hostages wives brought a sevusevu and food to the barracks today
in expressing their appreciation for the military's efforts to free their spouses.
The wives also voiced the increasing concerns of their families for the risk
to the
health conditions of the older hostages, some with known conditions requiring
special medication.
The army has undertaken to assist as best it can.
(END)
The Military Council has decided to lift the current curfew in the Western
and
Northern Divisions from today, 12th June, 2000.
This decision has been made after consideration of the security assessment
in
these areas and the wish of the military government not to unnecessarily restrict
normal business operations and the freedom of movement of the populace.
Security in these areas will continue to be monitored closely by the military
and
police.
The public are asked to be vigilant for suspicious or criminal activities and
to
report these promptly to the nearest police station.
