Speight's men behind restaurant fire: army
Tuesday, June 13, 2000

THE army believes that the Veiuto restaurant, The Lighthouse, was burnt by
rebel leader George Speight's group, said army spokesperson Captain Ratu
Eroni Volavola.

The restaurant, burnt on Saturday evening, was owned by Marjorie and
Thomas Lavaki. With a debt-free restaurant which opened its doors in
September 1995, the Lavakis had big plans for its development and recently
bought a new oven to cater for customers.

Army sources said at about 7.30pm on Saturday a group of 10 men from the
rebel group in the Parliament complex went towards the Muanikau Police
Post and verbally abused some officers there.

The men were apprehended, warned and then released. When the men
returned to the complex they apparently told the other supporters that they had
been beaten up. The crowd then ran towards the restaurant with sticks, stones,
spades and knives.

Mr Speight's supporter, Ratu Timoci Silatolu said it is difficult to say who
was involved in the burning. Ratu Timoci admitted there were criminals in the
complex they were trying to get rid of.
