CAMPBELLS Shipping Agency says five of their cargo ships returned
empty from Australia following the trade sanctions against Fiji.
As a result more than 500 containers of mainly garment, raw material, food
items, sewing machinery and other basic necessities which Fiji imports
from Australia lay idle on the docks in Sydney.
"All these stocks are on hold and cannot be brought to Fiji by us,"
said
Keleni Chung, a spokesman for the company.
"While cargo bound for other countries are loaded, dock workers mainly
members of the union refuse to load any cargo bound for Fiji.
"We are keeping our fingers crossed and hope that trade sanctions are
lifted as soon as possible to prevent shortage of basic necessities to Fiji."
It
is understood that most garment materials are shipped in the country by
this shipping agency and stoppage to the supply means more garment
workers will loose their jobs.
