hello- another week here and the hostage crisis goes on. The emotional
impact is hard on people - we have curfews, soldiers on numerous checkpoints
and jobs are going by the thousand. At parliament the army still lets in
hundreds of people from one area of the country and they arrive with food
and live pigs. The university has confirmed that thirty staff have already
left for good. Doctors and judges are leaving. There is a shipping ban by
unions in Oz and NZ. 4,000 people lost jobs last week. Many shop windows are protected by shipping containers. Prices are rising.
For me the whole scene looks like (it's) getting worse. But each day I go to
work and do some media releases so that someone outside Suva gets a bigger picture
of the tragedy here. And who would be an Indian in Fiji - the
smiling faces of the Fijians are like the expression in Macbeth - there's daggers in men's smiles.
happy days - Pat
