IND0-FIJIAN FARMERS PROTEST ILLEGAL FIJI TAXES

SUVA, Fiji Islands (June 20, 2000 -Radio Australia)---Indo-Fijian farmers in Fiji claim they are being forced to pay up to $8,000 in
illegal tolls to truck their produce through indigenous-owned land.

Representatives of about 500 farmers in the southwest of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, claim indigenous landowners have imposed an
illegal road toll of $20 a truck.

They say the fee is charged every time they try to use the road to take their vegetables to market.

They say local police have failed to act to protect them and they've been unable to secure any access to the military.
