THE People's Coalition Party is calling on the head of the military regime
to convene Parliament.
In a letter to Commodore Frank Bainimarama, members of parliament
requested the activation of Sections 68 (2) and (3)(a) and (b) of the 1997
constitution.
The section states that "other sessions of Parliament commence on a date
appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister, but no
longer than six months must elapse between the end of one session and the
start of another".
Section 68 (3)(a) and (b) state that "if the Parliament is not in session
and
the President receives a request in writing from not less than 18 members
of the House of Representatives requesting that Parliament be summoned
to meet to consider without delay a matter of public importance".
A People's Coalition Party spokesman questioned Commodore
Bainimarama's delay in calling on the party to form a government with the
purpose of setting up a government of national unity.
"We are the legitimate government with a legal mandate. Commodore
Bainimarama should allow Parliament to sit, especially those MPs who are
outside and this meeting can be held outside Suva."
The party suggested that since the country is run by decree, section 68
(3)(a) and (b) can also be decreed.
The party believes that this is the only legitimate alternative to bring about
normalcy. Other proposed solutions are illegal, criminal and
unconstitutional, said the party spokesman.
