27 JUNE 2000 SUVA (Pacnews) --- Fiji's deposed Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry,
and 14 other hostages have written a letter appealing for a speedy resolution
to the long-running crisis.
They've asked the former Vice President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo to intervene and
resolve the on-going political impasse, which has now entered its 40th day.
"It is the unanimous view of the 15 hostages that all efforts should be
made by your good self, the
sub-committee of the Great Council of Chiefs, the military and all other parties
to peacefully resolve the current crisis," the letter signed by former
Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry and the other hostages said.
The letter was sent via the Fiji Red Cross to Ratu Iloilo, who's mediating between
the military and the coup leader, George Speight.
The 15 Indo-Fijian hostages are being held in a conference room away from the
12 indigenous Fijian
members of parliament.
Meanwhile, one of the four women hostages released at the weekend, Lavinia Padarath
said legal action is one of the option the former Labour coalition government
will take once the crisis is over.... PNS (ENDS)
