SUVA: Small island nations like Tuvalu are feeling the effects of the
political crisis in Fiji.
Tuvalu has been hit by delays in receiving food and other goods that
were ordered from Australia and New Zealand.
This is due to Suva, the capital of Fiji being the transit point of
ships carrying items to Tuvalu from New Zealand and Australia.
According to Solofa Uota, the Tuvaluan Deputy High Commissioner to Fiji,
things are starting to "normalise" due to the lifting of the trade
ban
on Fiji from New Zealand and Australia to follow suit.
Tuvalu's Secretary of Government, Saufatu Sopoanga, told Pacific
Journalism Online that delays had been experienced in receiving food and
other goods from Australia and New Zealand.
"Tuvalu relies a lot on Fiji for its communications(services) and any
disruptions have communications with the outside world," Sopoanga said.
But according to Deputy High Commissioner Uota, Tuvalu has not
experienced any major disruption in its communications or its air
services from Fiji with Air Fiji providing airlinks between the two
island states.
Students from Tuvalu studying on Fiji had returned home and only
students in tertiary institutions have returned to resume with their
studies.
