New govt for Fiji: GCC

The Great Council of Chiefs has given the President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, the go-ahead to form a new interim administration.
The new administration is expected to be formed soon after the GCC ends its meeting later today (Thursday).
Radio Fiji News reports that the decision follows yesterday's GCC meeting at the Fiji Military Forces HQ, lasting 10 hours.
The chiefs have also reconfirmed their decision to support Mara in his efforts to restore normalcy to the country.
The chiefs decided to back Mara despite a presentation by the camp representing coup leader George Speight. But they will
recommend a pardon for George Speight and his group who are holding Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and some of his MPs
hostage at Parliament House.
The chiefs also discussed the plight of the hostages and a group is expected to go and meet Speight and his group this morning. They
meet for the third day tomorrow to discuss how to get their earliest release. The legalities of their decisions will also be discussed at
tomorrow's meeting.
