College's Community Outreach Partnership Center Conducts One Day-One-Block
Cleanup Effort at Flint's Dewey Park Mott Community College launched a major cleanup and beautification effort targeted at enhancing the City of Flint's Dewey Park area. MCC's Community Outreach Partnership Center (COPC) sponsored the One Day-One Block cleanup and beautification project of Dewey Park on Friday, June 23 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Activities were held at the pavilion in Dewey Park, behind the Sylvester Broome Center, located at 4119 N. Saginaw in Flint. This event was free and open to the public. As part of the day’s activities, volunteers cleaned up the park, trimmed weeds and planted native flowers in the area. Those involved with the COPC program also were available to offer advice on crime prevention, home maintenance and job creation programs that are part of the COPC program. Members of the Mott Community College Transitions School of Cosmetology were available to do nails and describe their program. MCC is one of only two community colleges in the nation boasting a federally-funded COPC (pronounced "COP-C"). COPCs are partnerships focused on revitalizing communities through service learning and outreach initiatives. The institutions partner with community-based organizations and various agencies in an effort to help improve the economic, social and physical conditions of neighboring communities, while providing opportunities for students and faculty to apply academic knowledge to real-world conditions. Service learning is an element of a course that provides students with a relevant and meaningful experience within the community – enhancing traditional academic learning while providing significant civic awareness. Some photos shown here capture the spirit of the day's activities.
