Artist's Biography

Mara Fulmer's education began as a journalism student with a major in Fine Art Photography at the University at Albany, SUNY. Fearing the possibility of unemployment, Mara cross-registered at a local junior college and transferred back to the university their entire core of commercial art courses. She later earned an Master of Arts in Advertising Design from Syracuse University where her work focused on Cross-cultural visual communications specializing in the South Pacific. Her interest in Pacific culture and visual communications culminated in a study of cross-cultural visual symbols of the Fiji Islands. She later completed a Master of Fine Arts degree from Michigan State University with continuing exploration in cross-cultural visual communications expanded to include examinations of urban and indigenous communities.

Her career has spanned both sides of the editorial fence over the last 27 years, working as Art Director for the University at Albany, and later as Art Director and Senior Photographer for the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. Mara's work in photography has been published in numerous publications and has appeared in regional shows in upstate New York, Michigan, and the South Pacific where she received an award for environmental photography. She also participated in numerous regional art events while in Fiji and her artwork is owned by collectors from Japan, Australia, Fiji and the United States. She continues to exhibit her creative work as well as seek out opportunities for publishing both for artist's books and books on design.

Mara's commercial work as a Graphic Designer has also been recognized with numerous industry awards. Her clients have been varied and interesting. Prior to moving to Fiji, she had redesigned the identity for the University at Albany, and her clients included the New York State Museum, the New York State Writers' Institute, and Old Songs, Inc. Later, she developed a complete design plan for the Fiji Museum which included developing logos, gallery symbols and signage, as well as their website. Her work for the Fiji Museum was recognized with the launching of the museum's design plan at a formal ball and honored by Fiji's Prime Minister. Other clients have included the, UNA/USA, WFUNA, World Wildlife Fund, UNESCO, International Labour Organisation, the Pacific Islands Museums Association, and the Institute for Pacific Studies.

In her creative work, she strives towards bringing together her interests in photography, digital and multi-media art, design and cross-cultural issues. The exhibition shown here is a part of that continuing examination of this multi-dimensional field.
